Imagine getting ready to give the biggest speech of your life, one that could make or break your career. Now, imagine you only have 30 seconds to get your message out. That’s the challenge faced by companies that advertise during the Super Bowl. Not only are the advertisements very expensive but they’re also ranked and judged by an audience of critics. I have no idea what the magic formula is for success but I have noticed certain patterns that suggest ways you can improve your own communication.
Don’t Get Too Cute: A lot of bankrupt Internet companies tried to be as wacky as possible. The problem was they forgot to promote what they offer the consumer. Everyone remembered something wacky about the spot (animals acting like people were very popular a few years ago) but later they had no idea what it was all about. Memorable is only good if there’s something about the product to remember.
Emotion is Good: Grab your audience’s heartstrings and pull on them. These are usually some of the simplest commercial but most effective. Basically they rely on some universally understood problem or situation. For example, what parent doesn’t feel guilty about not being able to read a bedtime story to their kids because they have to work? Enter the XYZ Company, which lets you read to you child with a phone/video hookup. The product is shown to help you do something that makes your life better.
Remember You’re Competing with Everything: Many of these commercials are conceived in a meeting room, edited in the quiet space, and reviewed by executives who watch the spots in total silence. Somewhere along the way, it’s forgotten that the audience will be doing a lot of things, whether it’s running to the bathroom, preparing food, or talking to friends. Holding people’s attention and making them forget what they’re doing is key to being memorable. Never assume that your audience is glued to your every word.
